Our Origin Story

At Thanksgiving, 2021 in San Jose, my brother-in-law said he is trying to travel less because of the carbon emissions from planes. Feeling it was irresponsible to travel by air as it contributes so much to carbon emissions. Especially that fun travel, that is highly optional.

While on a hike with my tree-loving son on that same trip, looking at all of the amazing diversity of trees at Alum Park. We got to chatting, “could planting a tree for each flight you take help to offset, and make that travel carbon neutral - getting to net zero carbon emission?”

So started looking into it, and found carbon sequestration using trees was already well underway at a big scale. There is an abundance of science on how trees capture carbon and store it, and all the generally wonderful benefits of our trees on planet earth.

So made it a personal project, for each plane trip taken by my family would calculate the carbon emitted, and plant an equal number of trees to capture carbon. As of the end of 2023, we’ve planted well over 1,250 trees just for our family, which will sequester 724,343 lbs of CO2 (over the first 10 years).

Our household is net-zero for carbon, and the idea for Carbon Tree Ranch was born.
